The Igbo Cultural Association in Sevilla, Spain (ICAS) is a non-governmental organization founded to preserve, celebrate, and promote the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people of Nigeria among Igbo diaspora members and within the larger Spanish community. Through events, educational programs, and community support services, ICAS aims to foster a sense of belonging, provide a cultural education platform, and support the social integration of Igbo and other African immigrants in Spain.

Our organization recently reached a major milestone by acquiring a community hall in Seville, a project made possible by the dedication and contributions of our registered members. This hall has become a cultural hub for the Igbo and broader African diaspora communities, providing a physical space where members can meet, share traditions, and hold events that enrich both our community and local Spanish culture.

Project Background and Rationale

As the Igbo community in Seville has grown, so has the demand for a larger and more equipped cultural center. In 2023, ICAS mobilized its registered members to purchase a small facility in Seville as an initial step towards fulfilling this need. However, while this space has provided a base, it is insufficient to serve the full scope of our activities, as its size and available resources limit the number and types of activities we can host. The facility currently lacks essential equipment, multimedia resources, and sufficient space for our various programs, including youth mentorship, cultural dance rehearsals, language classes, and outreach initiatives aimed at engaging Spanish communities.

Project Goals and Objectives

ICAS seeks to expand and equip our newly acquired community hall to make it a fully functional cultural and resource center. This project has the following objectives:

1. Renovation and Expansion: Expand the facility to accommodate up to 150 attendees and add rooms dedicated to specific cultural programs, including classrooms, a library, and a performance space.
2. Equipment and Furnishing: Purchase essential equipment such as computers, audio-visual devices, furniture, and learning materials for workshops and cultural programs.
3. Community Engagement and Outreach: Establish a Spanish-African cultural exchange program, including language classes, community events, and joint educational programs with local schools to foster multicultural understanding.
4. Youth Empowerment Program: Set up a mentorship and educational support program to guide Igbo and African youth through academic and career paths in Spain.

Project Impact

1. Cultural Preservation and Education: The expanded facility will empower the Igbo community to preserve and pass on cultural knowledge to younger generations, reducing cultural disconnection and promoting cross-cultural appreciation.
2. Social Integration: By offering Spanish language classes, multicultural programs, and community events, ICAS will strengthen social cohesion between the Igbo community and the broader Spanish society, enhancing mutual understanding and reducing social isolation.
3. Youth Development: Our youth mentorship program will equip young people with the skills, knowledge, and networks necessary to excel academically and professionally in Spain.

Funding Request

To bring this vision to life, ICAS seeks financial assistance from donors, development agencies, and cultural foundations committed to supporting community cohesion, cultural preservation, and social integration. The total estimated budget for the expansion and refurbishment project is EUR 150,000, which includes facility expansion, equipment acquisition, operational costs, and program implementation. Contributions will enable ICAS to create a self-sustaining community space that serves both the Igbo community and the local residents of Seville.

Conclusion

Supporting the Igbo Cultural Association’s hall expansion project will foster intercultural understanding, support community integration, and preserve the cultural heritage of the Igbo people in Spain. This initiative represents a significant investment in cultural diversity, inclusion, and community empowerment. We invite you to join hands with us in building a vibrant, inclusive, and resilient community center that will benefit generations to come.
